Back in Alaska for about a week this time, just a quick trip. I Came back for a doctors appointment (went well) and more importantly – to be with my RIVER. Ohh how I have missed her. My little River Rat. Also my Super Rat. And my better half… I am enjoying the cloudy and cool weather here. The fresh air (no nasty chicken houses or gross fertilizers here) and the ability to soak in the bathtub once more!
River is thrilled to have me back! I took the picture below of us today while I worked on the computer 😉
She has been in most excellent care of Kathy & Dave G. Playing with their Beagles and all in all, making herself quite at home. She sleeps on their bed (with the rest of the dogs) and even has a set of stairs so that she can come and go off the bed, since its a tad too high for her short legs! Kathy even handled the dental work River needed (originally I was going to wait till I had a chunk of time to arrange it myself). Kathy & Dave are AMAZING!!!
River & toy
I took these picture of her a few months back at Kathy & Dave’s house – seemed like a good time to show them off! And yes some of them are in Black & White – I rather like the effect.
River Sitting Pretty
River – while not thrilled at being apart from me, was living it up doggie style and is no worse for the wear. Clearly I am the one with separation anxiety here…
Warning: Worlds cutest Dachshund below (If I may say so myself here..).
Portrait of River
I sadly will be returning alone on Sept 3rd, due to my classes on the East Coast – but have complete faith that I will see my River again in the same health and spirits as she is now – which can you really ask for more? ~ J
I’ve gotten dates nailed down, plane tickets confirmed and such! Here is the most updated ‘where the heck is Joannie’ list.
18th to 20-21st – Drive down to Tennessee to put some boxes into storage, see the family.
23rd to 25th – Dog Training in New Jersey.
26th – Fly out to Alaska till Sept 3-4th.
3-4th – Back in Maryland from Alaska.
7th to 9th – Class in New York.
22nd to Oct 1st – Tracker Class.
First week of October is still up in the air with final dates, by the second week I will mostly likely be back in Alaska to pick up Miss Rivers and do more work with my AK dogs!
I’ve made it back to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. My last few days in Alaska were a whirlwind of trying to get things done, taken care of and last-minute projects.
As some may know, River is still in Alaska staying with good friends the Gardners along with their dog pack. I miss her terribly and feel a little lost without the patter of her furry feet following me around. I even wake up in the night trying to locate her and thinking that she ‘should have come in by now’ before realizing where she actually is at. As far as River handling things, she seems to be getting along well and isn’t horribly depressed, just a little more clingy to Kathy & Dave. They update me and send photos and even a video or two (I know I’m that person with their dog..) I have total faith that my little dog will weather the time away much better than I will… While it hurts to be away from my faithful friend, it’s a relief that she isn’t going nuts over the bugs biting her or being depressed alone in the farm house by herself – since Maryland is NOT a very dog friendly place. During the summers, no dogs on the beach, no dogs on the boardwalk – all year round no dogs in anywhere remotely like a store (even if they are in a carrier or backpack). The heat makes in impossible to let a dog stay in the car for even 5 minutes. While I understand not allowing dogs to touch the ground of a business place, I cannot help but be rather slighted when I am kicked out of a non food service business because I have a quiet well-behaved dog in my backpack. Children on the other hand touch everything with their snot covered grimy fingers, pull shit off the shelves, run about, scream, cry, whine and all other sorts of disturbances to the public. But its okay.. My dog in my backpack, must leave immediately! Okay, that’s it for my rant for now.
For the next couple of weeks I have much grass to mow, sun to avoid and sorting to do as I move my worldly possessions to a storage locker for safe keeping (and so that no one has to deal with my things). I’ll update the projected dates of travel and such as they come!
August is here. AUGUST. I was off adventuring again and the world sped up! I’m still in Alaska (till next week), wrapping up my dog training/sitting work along with the other odd jobs I do. This trip has been pretty exciting so far, Salmon fishing, Moose encounters and Seals (I think Seals are so cool). Stories and pictures to come eventually.
About the Summer plans, I have most of the ‘big’ dates ironed out, there is a few small things still up in the air so a few dates may need to be updated. Due to me having classes on the East Coast where River cannot join in, and not having an ideal place for River to stay while I am partaking, I’ve decided (along with Kathy G.) that the best place for her will be in Alaska with the Gardners and their pack while I am at the classes.
8th Arrive back in D.C. Drive my tired ass to the Phillips Farm in Princess Anne, Maryland.
15th (roughly) Run down to TN for a few days to put some stuff into Storage and work with some dogs, then Back to MD.
28th – Sept 5th Possible short trip to AK.
5th – Back in MD (if I was in AK).
7th – 9th Class in NY.
22nd – Oct 1st Tracker Class in NJ.
6th (ish) – Fly back to AK to get my RIVER! – Not sure if this will be a short trip yet or a work trip (3+weeks).
15th (roughly) – River & I back in MD.
Like I said, some things still have to be ironed out, but that should give everyone an idea for the next 3 months. Work wise I have random jobs lined up all over the place on the East Coast and will probably have another AK gig before the year is out.
I still plan to winter in Maryland when not traveling.
